This sculpture by local artist Erin Thormodsgard, depicting a family of mule deer, stands proudly on the lawn of the Custer County Courthouse in downtown Miles City. The buck, doe, and fawn are crafted almost entirely from repurposed scrap metal, retired tools, and farm implement parts. Rooted in Montana’s agricultural heritage, this mule deer family was born from the land and labor that shaped our community. Each piece of reimagined scrap iron once served as the tools and equipment that helped build this part of Montana—now transformed into a lasting tribute to our history and resilience.
